FAQ

  • Why is Live Edge Furniture sold at a higher price point than other furniture?
Live Edge Furniture is a niche market where every piece is custom built.  Most furniture pieces you find at big box stores are factory built in the thousands which reduces cost.  Next time you see a cheap “live edge table” at a big box furniture store pay attention to the wood species and the fact that the top is actually built from glued up dimensional boards with the live edge glued on.  Like everything in life, you get what you pay for.
  • Are Live Edge Tables hard to maintain?
No, our live edge tables are finished with high quality spill-resistant finishes that are durable and long lasting. We fill all voids and cracks with premium epoxy which results in a very smooth finish. All you need is a dry cloth to dust the top. If a sticky spill occurs you can use any wood safe cleaner.  For spot repairs you can gently sand the damage out and reply Rubio Monocoat to the area to blend in the finish.  Rubio is a great finish as it allows spot repairs.
  • Would I get to pick out the Live Edge Wood for my Table?
Yes, you can stop in in-person and pick out a slab(s) or if you’re not local to our location we can consult over email, phone or video call. We offer local delivery and shipping across Canada.  We will also provide guidance on selecting your live edge wood slab(s) during the consultation.  Please contact us if you're interested in a custom furniture build or have any questions about the process.
  • Where do you source the Live Edge Wood Slabs for the furniture you build?
All the Live Edge Wood is milled and kiln dried in-house.  This allows us to make sure we are only drying the most high-quality live edge wood. We also control the drying process which allows for less drying defects and very stable lumber at 6-8% moisture content.  When buying live edge wood or any lumber for furniture projects always remember that the most critical component in creating a successful outcome is to start with properly dried wood.  If the wood is not properly dried your project will encounter numerous problems such as warping, cracking and twisting of the wood.  The fact that we mill and dry every single slab we sell or use in our furniture builds allows us to create beautiful live edge dining tables, coffee tables and bar tops that will last for years to come.
  • Why is Live Edge Wood more expensive than dimensional lumber?
Everything about Live Edge Wood is BIGGER!  The trees are older and therefore rarer, the logs are larger and costly to transport.  Also since the logs are often large old growth we require specialized wide band sawmills to process the slabs.  Lastly since live edge slabs are so large, we have to take great care to kiln dry the slabs slowly as to avoid drying defects.  Live Edge Wood may be pricey but the character these old growth slabs have is worth it!
  • What species of Wood do you sell at the Old Schoolhouse Mill?
We predominately focus on live edge hardwood slabs.  This includes black walnut, black cherry, hard and soft maple, hickory, elm, white and burr oak, catalpa, white ash, etc.  We do sometimes get our hands on mappa burl which is an exotic species imported from Europe.  Mappa burl is predominantly used for epoxy river tables.
  • If I pick out a slab, can you build a table for me?
Yes, we provide a fully custom build furniture experience here at the Old Schoolhouse Mill.  You can stop in and choose the slab(s) for your project and we will work with you to create exactly the piece of custom furniture you imagined.  You can check out some of our projects on our live edge furniture page or our Instagram.
  • How is Live Edge Wood dried at the Old Schoolhouse Mill?
We dry all our slabs in-house using a woodmizer dehumidifier kiln.  A dehumidification kiln is a slower way to dry wood; however, it produces the most stable and vibrantly colored lumber out of all the kiln drying methods.  We pride ourselves on providing our clients with the best product possible; If it takes a bit longer, so be it, it’s worth it!
  • What is the most important thing to look out for when buying any kind of lumber?
When purchasing lumber for any project, the most important thing is to ensure that the material been properly kiln dried.  Lumber should be dried to between 6-8% moisture content which will prevent the wood from warping or cracking after finishing. Also, make sure to check the material for any drying defects such as cup, bow, twist and cracks.  When shopping with us you can be assured all our slabs and lumber is properly dried.  We mill and dry all our slabs inhouse thereby assuring a high quality product.
